Sintotan Granular premixture is a premixture containing a flavouring additive rich in hydrolysable tannins obtained by a natural extraction process from Chestnut woods.
Sintotan Granular Premixture is a brown granules with a slightly acid smell and bitter taste.
Tannins are substances naturally produced from plants in order to defend themselves from aggression of microorganisms, viruses, moulds, but also superior organisms: they have therefore antiseptic, antitoxic and antioxidant properties.
Many studies show high efficacy of Sintotan in the control of enteritis because of the astringent properties of the product (slow of peristaltic movements of the intestine).
Many studies show efficacy of Sintotan in reducing the amount of rumen degradable proteins and thus enhances the amount of proteins available in the small intestine because a tannin protein complex is formed in the rumen (at low pH), but it is unstable in the abomasum and small intestine pH. This interaction results in cleavage of the tannin-protein complex and allows protein to be digested in the small intestine.
In ruminants:
Sintotan acts mainly in the rumen, forming a insoluble complex with proteins. In addition, there is a partial action on bacteria, protozoa and rumen enzymes which result in a low starch degradation. Into the abomasum and in the first part of intestinal tract there is the release of protein and gallic acid from the tannin complex.
The tannin’s particular feature of forming a reversible insoluble complex suggests its use: in dairy cows to provide rumen by-pass protein in case of unbalanced diets, in beef cattle to feed with particularly high protein diets.
In poultry:
The troubles derived from a too much wet Iitter of broilers and turkeys may be related both to aspects of the group management (higher incidence of the environmental ammonia, worse welfare conditions, higher susceptibility to climatic changes) and to specific aspects of the quality of the product.
Recent experiences showed that low quantities of tannin included in the feed may significantly improve the percentage of dry substance of the litters through the nutrition.
This result is most probably due to the know activity of insolubilization of proteins obtained by the tannin extract.
The use of Sintotan in feed for avian species may improve the hygienic sanitary conditions of litters, with positive reflection on both animal health and the product value of the carcasses. No negative effects on zootechnical performances are reported. The higher is the protein content of feed the more are the results visible.
In rabbits:
The most troublesome kind of disease in rabbit are today enteric disorders.
The infection flows from mother to litter while lactating, and most frequent damages occur during the first month after weaning.
In this context, Sintotan has shown to be able to work in synergy with antibiotics with excellent results.
The best result is obtained when Sintotan is included at 0,2%-0,5% in the mother’s lactating feed, and when the weaning diet is included with Sintotan in addition with the usual prophylaxis for the first month after weaning. Sintotan can be used at a reduced level (0,1%-0,2%) also in the remaining period till slaughter, if needed.
